Creating a personal purpose stems from the heart rather than being an intellectual effort or a knowledge acquired from outside. Most of us, while merging into adulthood, start looking for direction and meaning. We seek fulfillment and a sense of worth. We feel compelled to find our worth toward ourselves and others. Being focused on aligning to our natural preferences as well as being curious and inspired about our meaningful positioning and contribution as unique individuals become a core need for self-realization.

Creating a mission statement helps us find our own answers to ever-compelling questions such as ‘why am I here?’, ‘what is my message in life?’ and, ‘what is my individual contribution as reflected in my life work?’

In order to figure out our answers to these questions, we need to understand what to include in our mission statement. The first enlightening part is knowing our heart passion and our natural giftedness and talents. These are usually the things that we have always enjoyed doing and that come naturally to us. They can be mental, emotional, spiritual and physical, and they usually make us feel fulfilled. We perform them with love and ease.

We need to also find out what we stand for, what is really important to us as individuals. And here we are going beyond needs such as financial status, job, social status, cars and houses. The question at stake here is our core values – values that drive our behavior, such as freedom, creativity, excellence, authenticity, empathy, integrity, prosperity, abundance, quality, competence, intelligence, harmony, fairness, curiosity, loyalty, morality, cooperation and generosity.

Lacking awareness of our purpose in life doesn't only affect our quality and growth in life, but also affects our morale and self-esteem. It leaves us feeling useless, void and stressed. As a result our health is deeply affected. Living with a mission reflects our "soul's longing" . It is what we have come here for. It's the longing each one of us carries within.
